Beach side vision brings up thoughts of beige sand, rolling waves, and bright sunlight. But these pictures are sometimes wrong. The majority of beaches do come in yellow or white colors but there are shores around the world that are much more unique. Some of them are with green, black, or even pink sand. These multicolored beaches see crowds of tourists who are tired of usual beige color of coastlines and want to capture unique photos.
Coastlines with black sand
Mentioned shores are result of volcanic activity so they include mix of iron, titanium, and other products of eruption. Sand of these beaches usually has high concentration of black volcanic glass that is created when molten lava flows into the sea, quickly cools, and then shatters.
Punalu’u Black Sand Beach in Hawaii is one of the best examples of mentioned coastlines. Swimming area of the beach has large amount of rocks so tourists choose picnic zone to enjoy unforgettable sight of jet black sand. Visitors may discover there Hawaiian green sea turtles that are legally protected. If anybody wants to take any rock or sand from the beach he should remember that it brings bad luck.
Playa Negra is also a good example of shores with genuine black sand. The beach is located in Costa Rica (on Caribbean coast in the region of Limon). Playa Negra offers to enjoy calm waters and safe swimming. On this beach tourists may spot wild horses that sometimes come down the mountains to the shore.
Pink sand beaches
Dreamy color of these shores comes from bright pink or red sea creatures such as mollusks, clams, and other microscopic shelled organisms. Thousands of broken shells (left behind by mentioned animals) are blended with sand turning it amazing pink color.
Elafonisi Beach sparkles with pink-tinted sand and turquoise water. It lies in southwestern side of Crete (70 km from the town of Chania), Greece. This place looks like an island and is a spot of breathtaking natural beauty. Families with small children like Elafonisi Beach due to shallow water. The shore is protected zone so there must be no camping, fires, or littering.
Harbour Island of the Bahamas is well known for its pink coastline that comprises three breathtaking miles of pink-tinged sand and warm clear water. Legions of tourists come there to enjoy natural beauty, luxury resorts, and most importantly to experience the unique feeling of pink sand between their toes.
Beaches with green sand
There are only four mentioned shores in the world. Green sand gets its color from olivine crystals that stay deposited on these beaches because they are heavier than other parts of lava. How light or dark green color of shore is depends on ratio between olivine and other components of sand.
Papakolea Beach in Hawaii is rare coastline with sand that has the highest olivine content in the world. Papakolea Beach is nestled in Mahana Bay and is isolated from most of the resorts. There are no organized tours, so reaching the beach requires both driving and hiking.
Talofofo Beach on the Pacific Island of Guam is the place where olivine-infused sand can also be found. The sand there is not as bright as on Papakolea Beach due to less amount of olivine. Green hue of the coastline is only noticeable in perfect sun and weather conditions.
